IUI Procedure
The IUI procedure is generally simple and painless, but it's normal to feel a bit nervous if it's your first time. Understanding the process can help you prepare. Here's what to expect:
Step 1: Collection of Semen
Initially, the doctor will collect a small sperm sample. This is usually done through masturbation, similar to a semen analysis. If your partner is unable to provide a sample at the clinic, she can do so at home using a sterile collection kit provided by the doctor. Just make sure the sample arrives within an hour after ejaculation.
Step 2: Semen Washing
Human semen contains more than just sperm; it also includes proteins, vitamins, and other essential components. Before the IUI procedure begins, the doctor will wash the semen to remove these unnecessary elements. This step is necessary for preparing the sperm for the procedure.
Step 3: Insertion of the Catheter
Next, you will lie on an examination table with your legs in stirrups. The doctor will first attach a vial containing the sperm to a catheter and insert a speculum into the vagina. Then, they will carefully place the catheter into your uterus through the cervical opening. The sperm sample will be gently pushed into the uterus using this thin tube. Once this is done, the doctor will remove both the catheter and the speculum.
How IUI Is Done
IUI is performed close to the time of ovulation, which can be detected using a transvaginal ultrasound or an ovulation kit. The sperm is inseminated just before or after the follicle ruptures (ovulation).
The entire procedure takes only a few minutes. It is typically painless, though some women may experience mild cramps similar to menstrual pain. After the procedure, it's recommended to rest for 15–20 minutes before heading home.
When Is IUI Treatment Used?
- Endometriosis: For patients with endometriosis who struggle to conceive, medications used in IUI can help produce healthy eggs. This can increase the chances of pregnancy.
- Cervical Issues: Scarring in the cervix or problems with mucus production can hinder natural conception. Since IUI bypasses the cervix and deposits sperm directly into the uterus, it enhances the likelihood of fertilizing a released egg.
- Unexplained Infertility: When the cause of infertility is unknown, medications to induce ovulation and directly placing concentrated sperm in the uterus can assist couples in achieving pregnancy.
- Male Infertility: IUI can be beneficial when the male partner has a low sperm count, reduced motility, or poor morphology, as it allows for the selection of the best sperm for fertilization.
- Donor Sperm: For females without fertility issues who need donor sperm, IUI is a less invasive and widely used option.
